Social Studies Core
At the heart of the FSC curriculum is Social Studies. We focus on understanding
various social groups and the interrelationships of the people within
them. What are their needs and how are they met? How are these groups
similar to and different from us? Within this framework, we introduce
other disciplines and skills, including reading, language arts, mathematics,
life sciences and the arts, into each grade’s program to make
a well-rounded course of study.
The students use workbooks and textbooks to enrich and practice their
skills, but these are not the sole sources of learning. Students are
also taught to develop their own questions, research answers, and critically
analyze information.
At FSC we also place a great amount of emphasis on experiential learning.
Our students build, cook, care for animals, paint, sing, garden, and
use math manipulatives to allow them to internalize, retain and utilize
information they have learned.
Proactive Participants in Society
Finally, as part of the curriculum, students are given the opportunity
to participate in giving service, both inside and outside of our school
community. At FSC, school community service jobs include watering plants,
running the school post office, handling FSC’s recycling program,
executing school assemblies, etc. Outside community service projects
may include visiting and helping elderly folks, providing a meal at
a homeless shelter, or raising money for local causes.
