It’s 9:15 am in Group 3, which means it’s time for math. Today, they’re learning about fractions, and the teacher has brought in some pizza to help explain what 1/8 or 1/4 actually means. It’s a yummy lesson that won’t be easily forgotten.

After math, Group 3 is off to the field next for P.E. A 10-minute run and stretch is followed by a game of soccer. P.E. is a chance to get out some of the physical energy that 10-year-olds are brimming with, and also learn sportsmanship and teamwork skills.

After P.E. they return to class and have a snack. Then it’s time for language arts, where the class is working on reports for their upcoming culmination about immigration. Today, they’re doing a second draft of the stories of their own families’ immigration to the United States.

Then it’s time for lunch. When they’re done, they get some time to hang out in the courtyard, and play games if they want. Or they can choose to spend lunch on the P.E. field.

This afternoon, in social studies, they discuss yesterday’s field trip to the Museum of Tolerance, where they saw an exhibit about famous people, and their immigration stories. They saw Billy Crystal, Joe Torre, Maya Angelou and a few others.

At the end of the day they have music, where they practice songs about immigration, that they’ll also sing at the culmination.

At 3 o’clock, they wrap up the day. Some of them head home with their parents, while others go to after care and extracurricular activities. Tomorrow’s another busy day.
