Middle School: A Day in the Life

At 8:15 am the middle school day starts, always with the same thing – something called “check in.” It’s usually about 5-15 minutes, but it gives everyone a chance to weigh in on how things are going in general, or specifically about some project or part of their school work. Sometimes, it’s just to mention something cool or interesting they did. It keeps everyone connected – teachers and students.

P.E. is the first of our six periods every day. Today they’re playing Prisoner on the field. The teams are co-ed and the games always end up being pretty evenly matched. If not, it makes for some great conversation.

The class comes back to the classroom for math. Some of the middle schoolers are doing pre-Algebra, while others are in Algebra 1. The Algebra group is working on word problems - how to turn plain English into algebraic expressions like 4x + 6 = 26, and then solve for x.

They take a brief snack break after math, and then move into science. They’re dissecting birds, and are looking at skeletons. Some of the students like it a lot more than others.

After their lunch break, the middle schoolers start the afternoon with social studies, where they’re studying revolutions. Each student is examining a different historical revolution, understanding what factors led to it, and what it accomplished. Each class member is working on a report about this. Some are creating revolution-specific costumes to wear while they read their reports, and others are writing songs to explain different aspects of their chosen revolution.

The middle school has an elective for 6th period. Some of the students are learning cooking. Others are doing musical instrumentals. They enjoy having options and choices, just like they will in high school.

It’s been another interesting day at FSC. Time to head home and get ready for tomorrow!
